Remembering battlestar Galactica
I just started watching this extra feature of disk six from the release of the original show. It is quite good. Richard, Dirk, Anne, Noah, Herb, Laurette, and Terry talk about there days on the show. Glen even says a few words. It is interesting as this was meant to be a mini series and not a series and was so rushed into production that it wasn’t funny. John Dykstra talked about doing the special effects and we saw a few of the various models they used on the series. Dirk mentioned the hardest part for him was shooting the viper scenes in the mockup cockpit. The production people would point a broomstick where Dirk should look; this is where a Cylon raider would be in post production. Friday’s were the day for all of the Viper stuff to be filmed and Richard thought it would be cool but was disappointed for all he was sitting in was a wooden Viper and a blue screen for the background. Dirk had fond words about Lorne who was the glue that held them together and Laurette talked about the sex scene in Saga. Yes believe it or not Starbuck was having sex throughout the series. It was left to the imagination however. In one take Dirk had his shirt off and so did Laurette. The scene was re shot for TV. They also talked about the guest stars and Richard mentioned working with Patrick Macnee. They even interviewed Macnee who looks frail. Patrick talked about his role of Count Iblis and how he enjoyed playing the role. Laurette spoke of working with Lloyd Bridges. Richard Crenna was originally up for the role of Commander Cain. She was nervous but Lloyd managed to help her shoot the scenes. Dirk talked of working with Bobby Van and Ray Bolger. Dirk even made friends with Bobby and the two stayed in touch once the show ended. Dirk also liked working with Fred Astair and there was also a nice tribute to the late Lorne Greene. Greene was noted for making jokes on the set, getting the actors all laughing, and returning to a serious note in a matter of minutes to shoot a scene while the others had to work extra hard to compose themselves for the scenes. Lance LeGault talked about playing Maga. The makeup was hell to wear. The eyebrows for the Nomen were made out of plastic while the beards were made from brillo pads. There was also a nice tribute to John Colicos. The man was larger than life so they made him seem that way for the role of Baltar often shooting up at him sitting in the IL Chair. Interestingly enough the IL was a lizard, they even showed the costume but this was all scrapped for the series. Dirk and the others mentioned the potential of the series. Herb even mentioned that what might have been if the show went forward. It would have gotten better as time went by. The Hand of God was never meant to be the finale for the series but the suits pulled the show at the last minute so even the cast and crew were left in the dark.
