Magnum pi
Source; www.darkhorizons.com
'Whit' has some interesting new speculation in regards to the recently announced movie version in the works of the classic 80's series:
"A guy I know, Mike McCullers, has just got the job to pen the new film version of the TV series Magnum PI. Long story short, I ran into Mike at the premiere of "Scary Movie 3" here in the UK last week. Brian Grazer is going to make the film at his production company.
Mike's on the first draft of the film version (the story will start from scratch, a'la the pilot episode of the series, with how Magnum becomes to work for Robin Masters and Higgins should it be without Selleck, otherwise it will kick off with Magnum on a mission in Taiwan - which is more the case now, he says).
There's not much to tell, but the studio has been suggesting big names for the lead role and the producers and writers have suggested they stick with tom selleck, just make the character of magnum older.
Mike says it looks like they may have won. No Clooney. No Travolta. No other name A-Lister. Everyone's agreeing that Selleck is Magnum, and audiences probably wouldn't respond if he wasn't. Good news I thought".
As a fan of Magnum (my third fave TV show after Buffy and BSG), I hope to God this is true.
Peter

If it's true... YES! I used to watch that show when I was a kid, and Selleck deserves to get a shot at the big-screen with it.

I love Tom Selleck as Magnum. He's the only one that can do the role justice!

It has to be Selleck as Magnum or it just won't be Magnum PI. Do you think they still have the helicopter :p

This is GREAT News!!
Magnum was just about the only show I watched in the 80s.
I gotta pile on the "Selleck IS Magnum" bandwagon! He is. A while back, I'd read that he was trying to sell a "Magnum" movie. Tom Clancy had agree to write the script if the movie were to be done. That was the last I'd heard of the idea; I guess it never sold. Too bad. Selleck has a great screen presence.
To pass along an annecdote: Selleck was on Leno's show after some project he did hit the screen (I don't recall which one it was.) He and Jay were winding down the talk, idly speaking of future projects, 'this or that,' when Jay blurted out, "Do another Quigley." The crowd exploded with cheers. I hope he makes that his next project.
Regards,
Gunstar Aries

I loved that show. I thought Tony Hillerman was great as the 'straight' guy
to Tom Selleck's Magnum.
I just loved all the people in the TV Show.
I hope the Movie does great!

It was hilarious to watch Higgins and Magnum square off on a regular basis!

Bad News, Sounds like it will be Clooney
Yahoo News is saying that Clooney is in negotitations to play Magnum, with LL Cool J playing TC. NO SAY IT ISN'T SO!!!!!
Quote:
Over the last decade or so that this movie has been in development, there have been two top contenders for the role of Thomas Sullivan Magnum, who have been mentioned in both official and rumored capacities at various points: Tom Selleck himself and George Clooney. That choice of whether to make the movie a continuation or a restart with a new cast appears to be the crux of the film's development. There have been recent rumors that Imagine Entertainment was considering going with Selleck after all, but I've received *more* recent information that George Clooney is not only the top choice, but close to signing. My anonymous source also provides us with our first indication as to who might end up playing Magnum's helicopter-flying buddy, Thomas "T.C." Calvin: LL Cool J. Apparently, LL has met recently about playing T.C., was received positively by Bryan Grazer and is the top choice for the role. The identities of the actors who might play Rick and Higgins are not yet known.

I loved Magnum PI in the years that it was on. Tom Selleck is as much Thomas Magnum as Leonard Nimoy is Spock, and Starbuck is Dirk Benedict. I can't see the worth other than wealth to the filmmakers, in bringing Magnum to the big screen without the defining elements that made it what it was to it's fans.

Isn't John Hillerman retired now? Think he's going to be 72 this year. Without him trading barbs with Selleck, who's going to play the part of Higgins?

You're right 14th Colony. Putting anyone ELSE but TOM SELLECK in the role
of Magnum is doing a grave disservice to the fans. I for one will NOT be
watching this ...........if anyone but SELLECK is in the role of Magnum.

I found this online petition to return the original cast of Magnum for the movie. As I think it would be so much better with Sellick returing. Of course the pitiful 600 people who have signed is pretty bad.
