Star Trek almost got it right...
I heard Leonard Nimoy tell a story once where he was walking in public when his cell phone rang. Without thinking he just stopped, took out his cell phone, flipped up the lid and started talking. All of a asudden he noticed people looking at him and chuckling. And he realized that he just mimicked what he used to do on Star Trek!
When I saw this design I was just struck at how similiar it is to the old show. I think its neat!
:tos:
btw I got the trek communicator picture from this place which does high quality replicas

it is strange how people use to think forward, while now all they do is look at the bottom line.
it does bear a strong resemblance to the cell phone.

Too cool! Now if only they'd put a speaker phone mode in cell phones, you'd /really/ have a Trek communicator!

I think it would be a great advertising coup to actually make a cell phone that looks/sounds just like a Star Trek communicator. People would buy it in droves just so they could flip it open and say, "Yeah, Scotty?"

LOL!
Imagine if they did this in an episode of Star Trek:Enterprise.
(Since they are using fliptop communicators)
Captain Archer: Can ya hear me now? Good.
Irreverently,

While we're on the subject of the Star Trek universe, here's a little article I dug up about 'anti-matter'.
https://www.nature.com/nsu/020916/020916-7.html
Also, I do recall reading an article some time ago about the 'transporter'. The experiments being conducted, by, I believe, scientists in the US, were very basic and were on the atomic / sub-atomic level. I just can't remember where I read the article but, I read it about a year ago or so. Definitely was interesting.

I have that communicator!....It has an 8 second recorder on it so you can say things, plus a calculator and a clock and it chirps when you open it. It is cool. I bought mine back in 1998 for $12.95. I just saw in my ST Communicator where they are selling for $295......a worthwhile investment, I should say. Mine is not signed though.

I saw that one too BST. They managed to transport a subatomic particle a very short distance. More importantly, they built an apparatus which they claim shot a subatomic particle faster than the speed of light! At least, that's the only way they can explain the experiment's results
Scotty, here we come...

Me too! Probably not in our lifetime, and I can guarantee only the very rich will be able to afford to travel that way.

If such a technology was developed a lot of people would try to suppress it. Can you imagine all the millions of jobs that would disappear overnight in the cargo industry? No more fedex, no more UPS, no more internation cargo shipping... on the other hand, no more packages lost by the postal service, no oil spills and no "we loose one ship every day but it don't matter" attitude by the maritime trade.
