Another Viper Mark II
ok so as if I didn't have enough modeling work on my plate with the new Battlestar design, I started another model last night. The Viper Mark II.
sure there are plenty out there but this one is mine . . . it will feel good to know when I do an image or an animation with BattleStar Themes . . . that the models in said themes are mine all mine . . . .

I took a few moments away fron the battlestar and started to do some more on the Viper mII, I think this one will go faster than the battlestar . . .
I find myself getting anxious to do some space renders, I have an entire set of scenes in mind, just got to get to the end of these Meshes first before I can have any kind of render satifaction . . .
By the way does anyone know where I can find any images of the new Cylon BaseStar . . . I haven't run into any of those yet.

These are some decent pics of the new basestar.
https://www.cylon.org/bsg/2003-art-05.html
I hope they help you as I don't have the skills yet to use them.
And nice progress on the Viper. Any plans to do the other new Viper?

Thanks mikala, I spotted those the other day, I thin those are going to be the images I use to build the basestar eventually.

I think this viper is going to be done before the nuGalactica is . . .
Which is good cause you know after I am done with the big ship I think I may be burned out on Model building for a bit . .
Also I think that when I am finished with this Viper, I will do one of the new Cylon Raiders, this way I will have enough to finally do some fan artwork . . .
you know because that is what this is all about . . can't have the Colonials shooting at each other now can I. . . .
I just threw the basic sections together to have a quick look at the ship. This Viper is very clean I must say . . I still need to join some of the sections together and do cut outs in the hull so the engines will fit in and reveal some of the detail I have been doing. I think some of my proportions may be off a bit here and there, but I am not going to stress over it, if I had more source material of the Viper as I do the Galactica I wouldn't settle, however I am still building this from images off the dvd and a few images from Cylon.org, So it will have to do...
Anyway hope you like the progress I think this one is going to rock . . .

Thanks Sandy . . Ohhh! I forgot the attachment in my email, I just re-sent you a .doc.
With the Viper I am trying to stay true to the production design as best I can, there are a lot of different Mark II's everywhere, all are really good but have very subtail differences from the production model. Two items right off are the narrow cowling, and the squared off engine housing that sits above the pilot.
The images on your site are really good, and are providing me with decent details.
I should be done with this ship in another week or so provided nothing else drops on my plate . . . besides, this is a good break from the BattleStar . . .

I know . . . . .
dang this came together pretty well I must say . . . I found some awesome images on the net at StarShip Builder .
As usual I tried to come as close to production as possible, but also threw in some of my own ideas as well. I particularly like the canopy, that puppy was custom fitted . . . .
Anyway, . . still some more details to add, and I need to fit the ship a bit more.
I figure I am about 75% done here, then it is off to the paint shop . . .

I actually think that you've managed to improve on the original done by Gabriel Koerner.
When you get around to a finished version (with markings, etc.) could you do just one with a TOS style paint job on it - I've always wondered what the Mark II would look like that way....
Regards,
Bryan

Thanks Bryan, don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing . . . .
I modeled it from images I got off of shipbuilder.com, If Gabriel was the one who made the Model for Zoic, then it was his ship I sourced from.
I actually started the viper before I had the images, and I was pretty darn close to a lot of things, my dimentions were off quite a bit in some places, but once I got the othographic views of the ship I just remade what I needed and fit the rest together . .
the old style paint job you talked about, isn't that what's on the new ships already? I will check it out and see what the difference is. but sure I can do that.
The paint job I have in mind for this is one that will match the battleStar I am building, with new ensignia and all . . . the vision I have in mind is awesome, just hope I can pull it off . . .

The pictures of this ship are what actually got me to withhold judgement and give the reimagined series a chance - I'm a hardware sort of girl, and if there's a good looking spacecraft in a show, I'll at least give it a go. The original Viper was always a favourite of mine, and its successor here was, in my opinion, one of the things the new series did RIGHT.
This model only reinforces that opinion... it's beautiful, and makes me want to fly one. ^_^
Fabulous job, Santee! Absolutely Fabulous!
Can't wait to see what she looks like outta the paint shop - it's going to be *stunning*

(FWIW - it worked... I like the new series. I still want the old one back, but I like the new one.)

Glad you like the ship jamie I am a fan of this new design also. it has a slimmer more aero-dynamic shape to it . . .
I am also glad that you like TNS as well, I too am an old series fan, and yep I think it would be awesome to have a continuation . . .
who knows . . stranger things have happened.

Ok so a bit of background . . . .
The Battlestar that I am building is going to be called "The Achilles". The color scheme I decided would be in the hue of Steel Blue . . nice . . .
Anyway how this relates to the viper is in that there are going to be 2 squadrons on board "The Guardians" and " Aggressor One". As we all know one of the cool things about the Mark II Viper is the ensignia on the cowl of the ship. I haven't worked on the squadron ensignia for Aggressor One, but here is a mock up of the ensignia for The Guardians . . . the background color is going to be the color of the Viper by the way . . .

Thanks Steve, nice to hear you say that . . . Nice Viper you built as well, I sourced a few ideas from you to put mine together.
This Viper is a very shapely design, the transition from the cockpit area to the engine section is definately sweet.

Nice design. To conform with the scheme GINO uses, I'd suggest using yellow and blue or yellow and orange for the emblem.

I will take a leap and say Mr. Moore, only because I know the waters I am in . .
however, because the idea of the squadron ensignia was not developed just recently, I am going to go with the norm and base it on the style of ship being used. All squadron ensignia are different in shape, content, design, color, and branch of service . . .
examples . . . .
because mine fit with the Viper scheme and the inevitable color of the BattleStar
I am going to roll with the Blue hue . . .
True yellow and Orange are like ensignia staples, I want to be odd . . . .

Well done and very impressive. Perhaps not a different branch of service since the Vipers are still battlestar based but another colony may go with a different paint scheme.

that is very true, I meant branch as in Army Navy Air Force, Marines,
But in the Galactica realm I think it would be as you said, almost like Battle groups in real life.

I'm not sure if the hull is a stand-in color but if not, I'd make it more gray so your emblems stand out a bit more.
Really nice job on the modeling.

Well, I am going to call this Viper done . . .
Finished for now anyways, I am not going to post it in the finished threads as I think I should wait until I actually put a scene together . .
There are some things I can still do to it, of course . . like weather the hull and add exaust burns to the thruster ports on the nose of the ship, then there is the Landing gear, ( almost sounds like I am not finished), but for right now she is flight worthy . . . .

I turned up the diffuse a bit more and lightened the hull it made the ensgnia stand out a bit more, almost like the untreated surface . . . I think when I do the Beta Squadron ship "Aggressor One" I will use the darker version of this viper with a lighter ensignia . . . that may be cool . . .
OK, back to the BattleStar . . .

Slick showroom Viper...
A procedural on the engine thrusters? Or is it a map? I like it either way.
