8.9 earthquake off Japanese Noreastern coast
Click To Donate
An 8.9 magnitude (7th largest in recorded history) earthquake hit 18 miles off the Northeastern Japanese coast, creating tsunamis that directly affected Sendai and several surrounding cities.
Hawaii, the Phillipines, Russia, and the Western coastlines of North and South America are also under threat of the tsunami. Alaska, the U.S. West Coast, and the West coasts of Mexico and South America are all under tsunami warnings. Coastal residents are alerted or are being alerted, and moving further inland.
Hawaii is due to be hit soon. I believe San Francisco is due to be hit by around 8:15AM PST.
For all of my friends who live in the West coast, if you live in coastal towns, I hope you have moved further inland. I don't know the projections of potential tsunami reach or damage, but please, if you live in a coastal area, do not take any chances, and please move further inland. And if possible, please keep us apprised of your situations if this is something that can directly affect you.
My dad lives in Washington State, last I knew. I've tried to call him. Got one answering machine, so I left a message. (Other attempts were met with "the machine is off"), so, I'm hoping that he lives far enough inland of WA state to not have to worry about it. Being ex-military, I think he probably has a lot of friends who contacted him as well to warn him. I pray so.
Welcome to the Department of Redundancy Department. How may I help and/or assist you?

Re: 8.9 earthquake off Japanese Noreastern coast
Here is a projected report for some of California, so this ought not be so bad as it could've sounded. I didn't mean to be a Chicken Little or anything, but I am thinking of my friends who could be in these areas.

Re: 8.9 earthquake off Japanese Noreastern coast
The forecasts I've heard suggest only the lowest-lying areas along the coast are at any risk, and if they're right about the size then most of these areas will have experienced storm surges that create more problems. I don't think our coast line is at any significant risk, but evacuations of areas potentially at risk are being carried out as a precaution.
The northern coast should see it any time, now...

I hope the forecasts are right, or are over-cautious.
In any case, Dawg, please keep us posted.

Re: 8.9 earthquake off Japanese Noreastern coast
I'm far enough from the coast that it had no affect on me at all. It appears that the Washington and northern Oregon coast escaped any real affect, but in southern Oregon and northern California a 6-foot wave struck, flooding marinas and causing fairly serious damage. Not many fish will be caught from fishing boats moored in Brookings, Oregon for awhile - most of the boats sustained damage (I heard the number 85% damaged, many beyond repair).
Near Crescent City, California, a small group decided to defy orders to evacuate in order to take pictures of the wave. Four were rescued, one was swept out to sea. He should be nominated for a Darwin Award, I think - but I extend my condolences to his family nonetheless.
The harbor there was heavily damaged as well.
But it will be a few days, yet, before the actual bill can be tallied.
The real problems are in Japan.

Re: 8.9 earthquake off Japanese Noreastern coast
To All concerned,
Personally, I am well and am much too far inland (approx. 7-10 miles) to be affected by any potential threat from this tsunami. The thoughts from members here at Fleets is much appreciated.
Everything held up rather well here in San Diego, and for that matter the Southern California area. We had a tidal surge that did do some damage to a bait barge in Mission Bay (our rather large local beach park area). It broke loose and slightly damaged some boats at one of the local marinas. No other issues were reported.
My thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this natural disaster. I fear the fatalities might be fairly high in Japan due to the tsunami. I hope to God I'm wrong.

Re: 8.9 earthquake off Japanese Noreastern coast
I'm glad to hear that so far, none of my friends here have been affected, and that damage is relatively minimal.
Sorry to hear about the guy who got swept out to sea, but despite his candidacy for the Darwin award, my condolences go out to his loved ones.
I pray for all the lives lost, and families displaced/homeless in Japan.

Yeah, I've seen that report too. Especially up 'round Jersey. That is terrible.

18 miles... that's almost no warning at all.

Re: 8.9 earthquake off Japanese Noreastern coast
I heard a report this morning that there are 50 brave souls back at the Fukushima (?) reactors trying to get the #4 cooled down. If ever there were a time for the sort of protection that Shadrach, Meshack, and Abenigo had in the fiery furnace—these brave ones need it.

Re: 8.9 earthquake off Japanese Noreastern coast
Yep, that is in the book of Daniel. (ironically, it's the story my son's class did last Sunday).
Oh, other reports I've run across: There have been 5 deaths and 2 missing people at Fukushima and that group of 50 techs is actually 3 teams of 50 each on a rotating basis. I think they even may have had to pull back now—not real sure.
Another bit: the Japanese emperor spoke directly to his people via video today, here's an excerpt (in English):
Quote:
"It is important that each of us shares the difficult days that lie ahead," Emperor Akihito said Wednesday. "I pray that we will all take care of each other and overcome this tragedy."
|
There's actually a word in Japanese for never, ever giving up.

Re: 8.9 earthquake off Japanese Noreastern coast
Today the reports have some good news, a 16yo and his grandma rescued from her home. They had been trapped in the kitchen and has access to yoghurt, water and coke from the fridge and were able to huddle under a couple of blankets. He's got hypothermia but otherwise OK, she is fine.
Gives the rescue teams some hope that its not all recovery.
The Aust teams have got straight off of duty in Christchurch (New Zealand) and straight up to Japan, along with the japanese who came down to Christchurch to recover in the Language school that was destroyed in the groundfloor of the TVNZ building.
Our parent company, Kirin, has lost over a billion dollars in assets between the Queensland floods/Cyclones, the Christchurch Earthquakes I & II and now the Japanese earthquake/Tsunami. This was all immediately after the Big Aus drought decimated our Juice Growers and our Dairy Farmers and the crop growers that support them. Thankfully all our employees have survived through all of this, but a lot of them are out of work indefinitely and coping with the loss of friends and wider family.
it reminds us mere humans that weather events have the power to erase us from this planet despite all of our inventive intelligence, but only human spirit has the strength to keep going.
Rgds

Re: 8.9 earthquake off Japanese Noreastern coast
And Christchurch has had a decent sized aftershock since I posted earlier.
if I was on the western side of this set of plates I'd be a bit nervous. When it gets jittery it usually does it all round :-(
At least the Japanese have some positive signs that plans for restoring control at the nuclear plants are progressing https://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...21/3169536.htm
cheers,
Lara
