Two quotes from Mr. Haven's review:
Quote:
There are genuine moments of excellent writing within the piece. Sadly, these moments are few and far between.
|
and
Quote:
In the end, this could be a good new show... provided there was some intense rewriting and the removal of any remaining evidence of Galactica. While some Galactica fans I have encountered since I broke my first story aren't exactly the most articulate people in the world, it is these very fans who have kept the faith alive for almost a quarter century, and they do deserve better than this. As I stated before, I don't know what happened with previous attempts to mount a Galactica, by original series Richard Hatch or the "X-Men" team of Tom DeSanto and Bryan Singer or why either of those failed to happen, but this is a step in the wrong direction. I give the screenplay a C- for effort and a C for execution.
|
You can read the rest of the sorry story at the URL listed above.
So far, two reviews, and two critical pans. Will Mr. Moore and the folks at SciFi get the message? We can only hope, but my gut reaction is "No."

I don't think reviews mean anything to TPTB. They want a quick buck
and look like they will do anything to get it. They are like the guy walking down the street picking up pennys and missing the dollar bills

The last line of Mr. Haven's review ........
This story is not worthy of the name "Battlestar Galactica."

I'm curious: Did anyone read the script reviews and find that there was information which they looked forward to seeing within the remake?
I know most everyone is a strong proponent of a continuation, not a remake. Was the evidence simply too damning, both from a fan's review (mine) and a non-fan's (Edward's)?
Michael

To answer your question YES and to quote the comic book guy from the Simpsons "WORSE SCIENCE FICTION SCRIPT EVER" at this rate don't be surprised to see Universal Studios efforts mocked and spoofed in the Simpsons, South Park or Futurama or any other animated show!

I didn't see any good additions. I saw glaring, substantive subtractions of a lot of good story elements.
I saw 2 diverse people say the same thing:
1) this is not hitting the best markets for this sci-fi property: the old fans and the pre-teens/teens. One won't be allowed to watch it and the other has been utterly betrayed.
2) This could be interesting if all references to Galactica were dropped.
3) This isn't worthy of the name "Battlestar Galactica".
And the last sentence of Edward's was more priceless than all the gold in Ft. Knox.
I'm way curious about what Ken has to say, too. No Pressure! No Pressure! I can wait.
my 2 cubits,

Michael, I thought that by calling the gal cylon 6, Moore could say that his inspiration was from the prisoner and use that reasoning to argue against those that would clearly see it as a rip off of 7 of 9. From what Filmjerk said, she is 6 of 12. lol. Then from what Filmjerk said, we find out that she has black hair when 7 of 9 was blond. This almost makes it more obvious what Moore was trying to do.
This is suppose to be a new and original idea but with 6 of 12 clearly being a re-imagined bad girl version of 7 of 9, Robots overtaking their creators (Blade Runner)
Shaky cameras, NYPD blue, G VS E style of filming, what's so new about this?

I am fascinated by the new Cylons. I think they sound much smarter, more of a deadly and believable (and respectable) enemy. I see the new Cylons as a credible threat to humanity, whereas before they were morons (due to insufficient writing, I don't want to torque off any Cylonophiles here). I do NOT like the "humanoid" Cylons, I think they are beng done solely to keep costs down (no "forehead of the month" club).
I like the idea of having character flaws, I just think they are layered on too thick. The military-civilian authority struggle between Adama and the President can be developed into an interesting by-story.
Making the Galactica layout more like a real aircraft carrier is also good, it will bring a shade of material realism to make up for the social mockery that is being made of themilitary personnel.
Better combat choreography is a must, one of my criticisms of the old series was that there really was only about a dozen space shots that were used over & over again during combat for the entire series. And they weren't particularly dramatic.
And PRAISE BE TO THE GREAT LORDS OF KOBOL, NO CUTSIE MARKETING CHARACTERS.
But the cheap sex shots, eye candy, and soldier portrayal is inexcusable. I could even swallow the gender swapping if it was at least handled with dignity or originality, but the plans as announced are just trailer-park parodies.

From what I just read over at the Sci-Fi board, one of the main characters is actually a humanoid Cylon.

I can. My only concern is: There are people who may want to watch this for the first time without having it spoiled. And I'd hate to see people going around, discussing it openly, and ruining it for others, if this mini-series happens to be made.
I do hint/allude to who it is within my review.

well.... I guess that would have to be Apollo. He's the one that's chosen to be away from Adama and the Galactica. So he's the can.
My GOD. THIS IS CRAP.
This is worse than Jim Phelps turning out to be a turncoat.
Moore is throwing in story elements in a vain attempt to create conflict instead of concentrating on good QUALITY writing!!!
ZAC Dies. Your brother is dead. You couldn't stop it. Infact you had to leave him behind. You don't get much more powerfully dramatic than THAT.

Well, considering that it is already largely already spoiled, no amount of perfume could detract from the fact that this is a pile o' garbage. May as well call it out and give us more impetus to rally the troops.
Unless, of course, you work for a TV company that is looking forward to a lot of replacement orders after angry fans throw bricks through their existing sets...

This review and Michael's have shown me that the new show is very disappointing. I can't believe this is the best possible scenario that could have been contrived by Ron Moore. The sexual elements seem too overdone and his homage to the original just seems more like an insult to me.

And if I do that, then I have to do it for everyone. Like I mentioned, scour my review. It's a gem within one of my comments. Just apply some logical deduction. We know it's about a character who's featured at the end of the mini-series, and something about said character which I didn't like.
Another hint: It's a major character whose name is familiar to fans of the original series (and, no, it's not Apollo).

Found it. Am PEEVED. That is just......ARRRRGH. Total Frack. Felgercarb. OK, it makes for the destruction of whatever's left of any coherent, recognizible relationships on Moore's (in name only) Galactica. (thank God Moore is oblivious to Sheba's existence, at least he can't destroy her.)

Ok, so I went back and reread Michael's review, and could not figure it out which character is the Cyclon.
Could someone either post here with a "SPOILER" space, or at least point me to the area of the review that contains the information.
Sorry for being stupid on this, but I'd really like to know.
Thanks.

Cosmic Cleric, AslanC and others: Do a search within https://www.battlestargalactica.com/f...02b-plain.html
and look for the sentence: "which is revealed in the closing moments of the mini-series" I'm not saying it outright. And I'd trust that you folks and others won't spoil it for others, once you figure it out.
To speed up the search, use your Alt + F keystroke to do a search within your web browser.
Again, please DO NOT spoil it for others, once you know/figured it out.

Thanks, found it. Sorry I was in "draw me a picture" mode! Don't worry, i won't spoil it for anyone (I hate it when somebody tells me the end of a movie before I've seen it myself!).
Damn, just when I thought they couldn't mess up the characters any more, they do something like this. Argh!
Oh, for the Mac people out there, its [Command + F'].
