Stargate universe
OK, I'm giving this a chance......looks good but the writing could improve some, but I am hoping it will be as good as the others and not end up as a StarTrek Voyager sequel........

Re: Stargate universe
Yeah, me too.
I've always enjoyed what I've seen of SG-1 but, I haven't even seen a season's worth. However, now that it's run its course, I'm going to get the DVDs and watch it... 10 seasons.. should keep me busy for about a year!
Hopefully, SGU will do well... ratings are up, from the premiere... so, at least they're heading in the right direction.

I can't say what this show really reminds me of do to the rules here...but it has a very dark and risque feel for my tastes. I'll give it a fair viewing before I decide whether or not I'll to be a faithful viewer. I am a huge SG1/SGA fan...I am not impressed with STU so far...

Re: Stargate universe
I thought so as well. I still think that it's getting close to being too slow-paced and needs to kick up the action just a bit. Not simply for 'shock and awe', though but, to avoid getting bogged down in the weekly crisis type issues.
I'd probably go 3.5/5.0 simply for pacing. Otherwise, I agree - good ep.

Re: Stargate universe
https://www.hulu.com/watch/102855/sta...ess#s-p1-so-i0
The episode is called "DARK" Much better than the three parter "Air" that led up to it. Now Carlyle has something at last with which to work as he plays Rush. The rest of the cast got with the program too. When you see this epispde, note the two astrophysicists, as they portray their defeatist selves. Rosencranz and Guildenstern, maybe? They make the Rush character work, plot-wise.
Eli Wallace character finally pays the acting freight and the stiff playing Colonel Young stops phoning it in, too. He must have a 13 episode guarantee, so now he gives some effort. I never liked Ferrero anyway.
As for the the Scott character, he still plays a lancer, but played off of whom? Now I wonder if Rush is supposed to be his foil.
Watch the episode, forget the bad science and the soap opera, and tell me why I'm starting to like Carlyle, the actor, even though I would still space the character he plays. That man can make written garbage gold. That just shows you how badly written the first three episodes were that he could do nothing with them.
This show has some promise. And I still look for the robot.

Re: Stargate universe
It wasn't that bad an episode, and it appears that Colonel Young fuzzball catches on.
For those who have not seem:
https://www.hulu.com/watch/104351/sta...ion#s-p1-so-i0
The episode is called "LIGHT".
Technically the lighting is awful, the music EXECRABLE, as is usual for the unnamed Vancouver based hack music writer, they hired for another Syfylis series that never existed.
Acting is fairly good, even the hypothesis of using a magnetic screen to draw off an electrical charge, as well as fuel from the star is plausible.
Carlyle, as Rush; and Ferrero, as Young, play off each other nicely.
The real gripe I have is the sound quality and the mumbling actors. Too many key plot points advanced by dialog, dropped out as the actors blow their lines during a rushed take, and the sound pickup drops out.
Somebody needs to take a two by four to "Mathboy" Eli. He should have figured Rush out as soon as I did. "100 pages of a rather dull book" and all those other hints in the script notwithstanding-it was obvious that they were headed for Mister Sun for a reason.
If I can figure out the MGD skim (Sundiver Novel), then Wallace should have told Young to have Sergeant Psycho (Greer) strap Rush to the nose of the Destiny as it skimmed the star's corona.
Never fear; Rush is here!
Guess which one is Colonel Young?
https://uzikalfaddim.wordpress.com/
One thing about Colonel Clueless Young I want to say: if you figure out that your chief villain is the chief villain, you don't let the villain KNOW you know just what clued you in that he is the chief villain.

It is rumored that they have a 20 episode guaranty with a possible 2nd season. I am not liking "Other Show"SGU ah I mean STVSGU ah I mean SGU but I am giving them a few more episodes.
In My Opinion: It is a sad day for SG fans if SGU is the future of the SG story.

I agree. You havea stronger stomach than I do. I found the pilot unbareable and had to turn it off half way through. ...refuse to witness another great franchise get GINO'd by SyFy.

Its getting better. Water felt more SG-like than a Syfylis series.
https://www.hulu.com/watch/105673/sta...ter#s-p1-so-i0
There is a lot of confusion about what the writers wanted to do. How can a cloud of razor blades be a sand monster?
Its also obvious how the monster got on Destiny. That idiot, Rush, failed to decon properly.
Greer, who is supposed to be Sergeant Psycho, is not being well written at this point. How can he be a psycho one episode and operate as Sergeant Slaughter the next episode? Nothing wrong with the actor; he takes what he gets and plays it straight. He seems to have the NCO mannerisms down, though its obvious he's never seen the military in his life. .
I need more specifics in the writing. I want to know, if you refer to Carlyle spouting that "lies" garbage to David Blue who plays Eli; why do you as a writer, think the Wallace character is a child for asking or objecting to the lies? Unless I missed something, then there is no reason to regard Eli as immature among "adults" as Rush does and says. He's been "adult" successful and useful (sled) this entire episode. What did did Rush do this episode? Nothing. Even Greer came up with a Razor Cloud flamethrower prod and Johannsen came up with a plan to get rid of it. All Rush did was try to convince Young to abandon Scott, and what outcome did his advice generate? NULL effect. That plus the wrong lesson he tried to impart to Eli that adults lie to each other, make it even more imperative that Young be fired and Rush shot for incompetence. The only grownup this episode by acts, besides Greer (sergeant) and Johannsen (the medic left in command), was ELI, who made the SLED that ferried in the water ice and the comatose Scott.
By the way, why did Young go out to chop ice again? He was the only EVA guy, they had besides Scott? That is NOT his job. His job is to TEACH Scott how to teach a couple of NCOs and a geologist to go out and get the ice while he, Scott leads.
Notice how I would write that? Use Young as the Mentor, and Scott as the grunt leader.
And of course, I would completely rewrite Rush. If Carlyle doesn't get something different to use, then he will be reduced to Zachary Smith caricature even faster than I predicted.

Our three flawed heroes Young, Wallace, and Armstrong are stoned back to Earth and play out the episode back there, while Colonel Tolfard takes over for Young aboard Destiny, the boys Earth-side run an experiment on Destiny by sending a couple of physicists with Tolfard spirit to mickey mouse with the damaged ship
Rush plays his usual scheming obstructionist self against Tolfard, while soap opera occurs back Earth-side as Chloe amd Eli go clubbing and Young commits adultery with his wife (figure it out yet?).
Criticisms:
1. Tolfard was a cardboard villain as written.
2. Chloe character was supposed to be comic relief? Not handled well. The pair off with Eli in the car was too cliche.
3. The sound was terrible.
4. The writing was below standard.
5. The camera work was not good. Hint: a two shot is supposed to frame TWO PEOPLE.
6. This was a slot filler. Somebody wanted to show Destiny shooting guns and they wrote this episode to get the CGI work in.

????????????????????????????????
This is a time-loop story. Using clumsy camera effects and intercuts, two versions of the same story of infection striking down the main cast members occurs in parallel time. The crew aboard Destiny get sick while they watch a food gathering expedition they will send to a jungle planet, (from the KNO their scout party recovered) get sick and also attacked by giant flying termites and die. During the course of the epispde we get a look at the religious side of Rush, atheist Eli and the totally befuddled Scott who figures out the tertiary time-loop when he goes with the pre-emptive strike party after the cure on the jungle planet for the infection that Scott and that idiot, Young, brought back with "Water". After Rush explains the solar flare lens effect to him in Destiny Time, Scott sends a warning through the gate. Lets just say that when Destiny's crew finally breaks the loop, there will be at least three KNOS and two videos involved.
Its a variant on the Flash Forward theme and I found it mildly interesting on a science level QM wise. As an Eli character study it was somewhat over the top with the back-story about mom and the HIV bit and grandpa going into the ground. I thought the Rush character glimpse, what motivates his cowardice and egotism, the desire to learn how the ancients did it, cheated death, was a bit better handled.
Well that was my story take.
Sound quality was poor.
Camera work was bad.
Storytelling was good.
Acting was very good, especially Wallace and Greer.
1-5 give this a 3.6.

Re: Stargate universe
Okay it is official with me that this is now SGINO! I just finished watching all of the shows so far...
They must be filming these episodes with the very same cameramen and effects crews from the "you know what" show!
Same sound effects, same shaking cameras, same panoramic space shots, same music in the SySy ads, same "must challenge authority" attitudes, etc.
Ooooo I want to say so much more but I'll get banned...I'm going to the Skiffy boards to vent!
What a Huge Disappointment!
I really love the Stargate concept and then the makers go and do this feldercarb!
I hate dark bleak @#%$&%*@#%!@%$#^$stuff like this show is doing. Man they could be making this show so much better than it is. These actors are not bad...but the writing IS. I could even accept the "You-know-what" show's effects and sounds but they just had to crap on the Stargate concept by being like that "other" show.
Is it December 21, 2012 yet? Put us out of our misery...

Re: Stargate universe
It's funny, b/c they're copying that other show, even though the latter lost 69% of its viewership and had a joke of a deus ex machina finale and another movie that has gotten even more dismal ratings. ...so, I don't see what was the lure into copying the other show.
I read the last show went for the shock value lesbian scene via using the stones, in a lame attempt to get 12-16 year old boys to tune in...

Re: Stargate universe
The big problem with this show is they intentionally tried to make it different from the first 2 SG series and they've managed that. In the process (as some have mentioned), the template seems to be borrowed from one or two other contemporary SciFi genre shows.
It's not working for me....it's just not. I can watch reruns of SG-1 and SGA later in the evening and I'm more entertained by the reruns than I am with the new show.
The mid season finale will be a week from this coming Friday - I'd say that they should take the long hiatus and take a good hard look at what's not working. The viewer numbers are dropping pretty fast. At this rate, it's not gonna be around as long as SGA was....

Bonnie Hammer is still very much involved in the creative process at SyFy, regardless what the chain-of-command reads. She's hellbent on CWing SyFy.
