Colonial laser from Monsters In Motion
I *just* got my blaster from MIM. It comes in a plain white box, in two pieces of white resin (gun & trigger). The end nozzle is part of the casting. It certainly has some trimming/sanding coming its way, and some major work on the center seam that runs practically all around the entire gun. Some parts around the handle & under the nozzle are filled in- easy enough to sculpt out though. Also, some detail on the top of the gun is a little rough & will need filing. A depression on one side needs filling (not much at all). One area to open up on the underside due to 'flash'.
This is a 'kit' in every sense.
My instincts tell me this is a fairly competent 'recast' of a very good original prop replica; And, it's also a hollow cast- that's good for peeps wanting to put lights & stuff in.
Being a modeler, I am COMPLETELY happy with my purchase! And at this price ($57 with shipping!). From scratch, it would be more $ & way more time.
That's my review, and I'm hovering with it!

Re: Colonial laser from Monsters In Motion
That's nice that its hollow. Easy to add stuff. I have an old one I must have bought almost 20 years ago that's solid resin. It is a nice cast, but one heavy hunk of plastic. Can't wait to see what you do with this one.
And though I may be biased, I have to say this was always one of my favorite laser gun designs, and one of the best to come out of Battlestar Galactica. Even as a kid this design made sense to me, because it looked bulky and powerful, just what you would need to blast through Cylon armor.
Who did originally design the blaster anyway?

Ahh, I'm just gonna trick it out a bit on the paint job- no electronics. I don't like resin as a rule, not for complex build-ups, anyway. I may use it as a template for a scratch build working one in future, though. Wood and/or styrene.

Me too! And I love the sound it makes. The TOS phaser is my favourite super-hi-tek weapon, but as lasers go, this is definitely the best of all time.
Red Eye swears by them.
Or did.

Wow, I thought if anyone knew that, YOU would! I'll have to research that one.
The only ho-hum design IMO on the whole series was the communication device. Everything else was inspired excellence.

Damned right, this is my favorite SciFi laser weapon. That's why between me and my wife, I have 5 of them laying around my house lol. One is a hollow cast that I eventually want to add electronics to.
big powerful and intimadating. LOVE it.

I like the Logan's Run DS gun too. But to burn down a metal chip sucker, nothing gets the job done like a good old Colonial sidearm!

I still prefer the E-11 Stormtrooper blaster rifle meself, but the Colonial Warrior pistol is a nice design.

Sandman gun is a favorite too. I think because its sleak design, and its so damn beautiful when it fires the blue flames from the barrel. A practical/physical prop! No extra special effects needed... except for the exploding squib on the runner. Why do they run? Now they definitely won't be renewed... foolish runners.

Indeed, that was an excellent practical prop.
As I recall, Michael York said in the Logan's Run commentary on DVD that they were troublesome to actually get to firing. That they worked perhaps half the time....so I'm sure they had a LOT of reshoots when involving shoot out/firing scenes.

Re: Colonial laser from Monsters In Motion
A putty'n I go..
After sanding, black paint & the first clear gloss lacquer...
I'm not going for a pristine 'phaser' look here; used Colonial standard.
Frack. I have to go get more flat lacquer....

Re: Colonial laser from Monsters In Motion
Very nice paint job... Looks really good.
Here is a video I shot of the blaster I bought off ebay a few years ago. Sorry, I can't remember who I bought it from and so far I have never been able to find another one like it that works.

That has great sound & light! Strange though, the see-trough holes along the top of the barrel... never saw that on another gun.
Great workmanship.

Yeah, I really love it... I've been trying for the longest time to find the guy I bought it from on ebay... But I have not been successful.
This is the only version I have ever seen that is a working version.

I remember paying almost $200 for it. No it wasn't cheap at all. But I figured it was the only working version I had ever seen.
Do you have a link to the coyle laser?

Heh, I'll make my own. In the mean time, Take The Celestra showed me that my colour scheme was in error- I re-did it:

Hey Mat, can you tell what it's made of? Resin? PVC? Wood?
Just curious.

I think it's made of PVC... Some of it is hollowed out to make room for the sound card and speaker...
It's been dropped a couple times and still holding together.

Re: Colonial laser from Monsters In Motion
I'm starting to think perhaps it was from coyle laser.
I think I lucked out because I put in a starting bid and when the time ran out, I got the last bid in.
I checked out the ebay store and I think it is the same person. Hmmm. I'll just have to get me another one.
I really love it.
It's a great show piece, next to my Han Solo blaster. I get lots of compliments on it.
I should have two... One for display and one for the cons.
