Your first assumption is correct, a bayonet.
See in 1978 one could not show a Cylon bayoneting the neck of a baby in prime time.

One thing that always made me think was the Cylon use of swords. Do you think it could be some hold-over from their reptillian days, or something they picked up from humans when they first made contact?

I read or heard somewhere that they were bayonets, and they disappear about midway through the series because they were in fact dangerous.
As to why the Cylon's use swords and bayonets...they are a practical weapon against organics, particularly since lasers seem to perform somewhat poorly against such creatures, and the construction of those wielding them lowers the risk of HTH combat.

Heat sink, maybe?
Maybe it's just Cylon alien aesthetics. Like the big afros the Imperious Leaders had. Or the Realdoll(TM) form they use in the new show.

That's a good point. In other cultures around the world people have their
own clothing styles for their 'uniforms' for fighting, chants etc ....in order to
incite fear from their enemies so that could be possible.

I remember in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy novels that a particular brand of lazer rifle was aesthetically designed to give the unmistakeable impression to whoever it was pointed that they were INDEED on the wrong side of it.
Kill-O-Zap I believe.

How about the mudflap behind the Centurions?
Or for that matter, Lucifer's dome with the visible lights under it? Does letting us see the lights blink have any REAL purpose? Maybe it's status lights like we have on our computers and modems to let us know everythings functioning. Or again it could be like the crystal "Bayonet" and be there simply because the display looks cool. Why does he look more like a human than a Cylon or a Centurion? Of course he might have been designed after the Centurions took over.
How much insight into Cylon culture do we have before the Centurions supposedly did them in? We humans put non-funtional, pointless crap on stuff simply for the purpose of looking cool. Like fins and flames on a '57 Chevy. The notion that Cylons have eccentric attitude toward visual aesthetics makes them a bit more beleiveable as living creatures. Well, once living creatures at least.

It was probably a left-over from organic days, which their programming made no reference to, so it was kept. They simply don't notice it.
