Starbuck and Moby Dick
I always thought Starbuck was an odd name in a show almost entirely composed of names from Mythology. Adam(a), Apollo, Cassiopeia, Athena and......Starbuck...
Sounds odd don't it?
I've been doing a little research on Moby Dick. It turns out that Captain Ahab's first mate was non other than a Mr. Starbuck!
He was a good man who was concerned Captain Ahab was endangering the crew. Unfortunately the ship Pequod was a doomed ship. Starbuck died and almost all the crew died. Only a young recruit would survive to tell the tale of Moby Dick.

Moby Dick
I read that book as well and remembered the character of Mr. Starbuck. I also remember Dirk in an interview saying thet Starbuck was around allot longer than Han Solo. Han seemed to me to be a take on this Melville character than our own Starbuck.

Well, Dirk has played two different Starbucks, maybe someday he'll look old enough to play the Moby Dick one.
Maybe not.

The Moby Dick Starbuck wasn't that old. Dirk could play the role today.

Call me Ishmael..................
Ray Bradbury wrote the screen play of Moby Dick, the Melville lines quoted by Ahab & Khan are from Moby Dick. The Bennet/Sowards screenplay paraphrased Melville's Ahab sea based lines into Khan's lines from Moby Dick to make 'em space based.
Alas, Melville's 1st mate Starbuck considered replacing Captain Ahab, but being a Quaker realized he would have to kill Ahab, so everybody but Ishmael died.

I didn't say Dirk wasn't old enough, I said he doesn't LOOK old enough.
