A Cylon assault demolishes two Colonial agro ships and damages a third. Adama leads a mission to the planet Sectar to obtain seed/supplies from a backwater agricultural outpost of the Colonies, where Starbuck is tricked into defending the outpost against local raiders.

Series stars; Richard Hatch as Apollo, Dirk Benedict as Starbuck, Herb Jefferson Jr. as Boomer, Lorne Greene as Adama, Terry Carter as Colonel Tigh, Maren Jensen as Athena, Tony Swartz as Jolly, Laurette Spang as Cassiopia, Noah Hathaway as Boxey, Sarah Rush as Rigel, David Greenan as Omega, and John Colicos as Baltar.

This episode never aired on the Cincinnati or Dayton stations during the series' original run. I don't remember seeing previews for it at the end of the previous episode (which I think was Ice Planet) in 1978, and I don't think the episode was ever repeated. So I didn't watch it until it became half of one of the telemovies in the 1980s.
Although different reference materials I've read give an original airdate for Magnificent Warriors, did it ever actually air in 1978 or 1979? Did the rest of you see it then, and if so, what city/cities did it air in?

I remember something about it way back then so I think it did air (I was living in South Texas at the time). This is the episode where the Borays make their appearance. To me, this has got to be one of the worst episodes in all of Galactica. I would place it right at the bottom! And who would name that thing "The Magnificent Warriors?" The name is totally lame and does not mean a thing in this episode...

which also brings up an interesting topic, amazing how many episodes have "God" in the title. (Lost Planet, War of the Gods, Hand of God)

that Starbuck's getting conned was worth the rest of the slow episode. He was so sure of himself and his abilities with Pyramid, the to find out that he was the patsy! His reaction was fantastic. (Also, he looked fabuous!) This episode proved that no matter how bad the script, Dirk could pull something worthwhile out of it. It was a "fun" episode without much substance and an implausible premise, but Dirk shined as always. Just my opinion!

I have to admit, Dirk did shine in this episode besides the subject matter. It is downright shameful that the town constitution has a provision in it that anyone who accepts the badge MUST become constable!!! They deceive anyone into the job. That is ludicrous!!! And the fact that Starbuck and rest go along with it is even more insane. They are Warriors that can blow that entire town off the map, and they are stuck doing "the right thing?" by letting Starbuck play constable??? Ridiculous!!!

When it comes out on DVD, make sure you watch this one.

While the plot might have been a little trite, it was sheer fun from beginning to end. Between Adama have to deal with the overzealous Siress Belloby and Starbuck having to explain himself for losing the powersled, it was a riot.

It's gotta be my all time favorite, along with Belloby, who I took my name from. Siress Belloby has been my all-time favorite character from any science fiction TV series since I first saw that episode in the 70's. The way she made Adama squirm....hilarious!

P.S. Rumors were that if BG had gone into a second season, Belloby would've reappeared and it looks as if the Adama/Belloby relationship was going to be developed.

Also, this was Lorne Greene's favorite episode.

Casino Royale back in the 50s. It was on a televised mystery movie seies on CBS if memory serves. You can own a copy of the special on DVD. It is one of the bonuses on the campy Casino Royale spy spoof DVD.

Casino Royale was in fact the FIRST Bond novel. Flemming was desperate to get his character on film through any medium. This was the first attempt.

Not one of my personal favorites, but good work by Dirk.
The Belloby character annoyed me almost as much as she did Adama, but Brett did a good job with her.

It also showed a nice twist between the Adama and Starbuck characters, with Adama's clear annoyance at Starbuck getting duped into being the constable. The Jondrew-Pig guy was a good villian, too.

bottom three shows on my list worst than all but 2 of 1980 except for adama squeirmingover bret better in match game like the wording on sceen though in beginingof show only ones worst in show were parts 1 and 2 earth and fire in space cant they just shut off the froce feild to let space in for that matter how did the cylon fly in the bay worst aliens in sci fi should have put bret on the grid barge for bad acting

Actually, that's one of the reasons I like the show so much. It played a major role in reintroducing religion to science fiction. Until BG, all major SF characters were either agnostic or atheist, since no person with religious faith could be considered intelligent. BG helped to change that and make religion respectable again.

Also, as a side note, the religious background of BG was obviously indebted to Mormonism, and clearly some of the major players/writers were either Mormon or knew a lot about the Mormon faith. Even though I am Presbyterian, I felt that the acceptance of faith was a move in the right direction.

Casino Royale may well have been Fleming's first Bond novel, but the movie came out in 1967, and David Niven played Bond, not Barry Nelson. I cannot find any reference to a movie or TV show by that title released in the 50's. Is there any more information available?

Not only to Mormonism, but to Judism and to Islam as well.
THat's one of the reasons why I loved and still love BSG because
it was inclusive of all minorities and cultures.

Yes. "Casino Royale" starring Barry Nelson as James Bond and Peter Lorre as the villain Le Chiffre aired as an episode of the CBS anthology series "Climax Mystery Theater" in 1955, which was a weekly series of live dramas. Nelson played Bond as an American agent while the Felix Leiter character became a British operative "Clarenece Leiter."

This live broadcast was believed lost until a kinescope film was found in the early 1980s, and today you can see the entire program as a supplement on the current DVD release of the movie "Casino Royale" which is another thing entirely. At the same time Fleming sold "Casino Royale" to American television for the "Climax" broadcast he also sold the film rights to producer Gregory Ratoff. Ratoff was unable to get a film mounted and after his death the rights were sold to producer Charles Feldman. Thus, when Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman bought the rights to the rest of Fleming's novels in the early 1960s, "Casino Royale" was already out of their hands. Feldman eventually tried to cash in on Bond-mania by making "Casino Royale" as a wild spoof movie in 1967 with David Niven as the "real" Bond but with other comedians like Peter Sellers and Woody Allen in the cast too. This silly psychedelic mod comedy is basically the real inspiration for the Austin Powers movies.

Hope that clears everything up! Bottom line though, is that Barry Nelson was indeed the first actor to play James Bond in any kind of dramatization.

I have to admit that as a long time Match Game junkie from way back and also from the Game Show Network repeats, it is too much for me to accept Brett in a Galactica episode especially when she is basically giving us her Match Game persona unchanged! I keep waiting for her to say to Adama, "The energizer is hidden in the BLANK!"

Speaking of Match Game regulars, I could more easily envision Charles Nelson Reilly as a cowardly Council member being shoved by the Alliance enforcers into the shuttle in "Baltar's Escape."

They could've done more with the Borays. I think they were originally planned to be one of those "bystander races" who were common throughout the Galaxy. Remember the deleted scene on Saga with the Boray casino manger(Carillon)?

Boray: Gentlemen, welcome! I see by your emblems, you're with the Colonial fleet. I didn't realize it was in the area!

Starbuck: Well, actually we're sort of a recon flight.

Boomer: Yeah, we're just here to make sure that the Armistace is being observed(throughout the systems).

Boray: How worthy! Consider yourselves guest of the Establishment! Food and Drink are on the House!!

Not good,I hate to say that but IMO it's the truth.I've been watching the episodes
in order on DVD and skipped the Ice Planet to watch this one with a friend and that was a mistake.I was hoping that all the shows were golden since there are so few but ,oh well I'm sure I'll still watch it a dozen times.

Not all the shows were golden: it was too rushed into production.

The redeeming thing about this one (and it does need redeeming are the interpersonal relationships: Getting to see Adama off balance with Belloby and Belloby being so over the top--hilarious. But the show was silly. Gun on Ice Planet Zero is waaaaaay better.

horses that cracked me up.And when that guy called the WARRIORS brave and
all they really did was hide behind a bush or something!CLASSIC!
