Oh Muffit that was really cool
After reading these two sections I knew what "you" were and what you were describing.
"Through my periphery, I saw the bars on either side, and walls perhaps at head and feet. I was in a cell."
and
"It was then I noticed it; a bizarre device suspended above me. Forming a circle at its perimeter, hung pale colored objects, of shapes I could not begin to understand. "
After working in the maternity ward I spent many hours thinking about the birthing process and the world of a baby and how they might perceive their surroundings the way you describe it is very much what I imagined.
The way you have structured this story reminds me of a short story I read in college called "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson
