Muffit's Going Greek!!!
That's Greek -- not GEEK! LOL!!!
Tomorrow is gonna be my experimental celebration of Armenian cuisine, that as you all know I've been planning all week. I had the worst time trying to find everything. Guess Hispanics aren't too keen on European tastes (most of our little town is Hispanic and Portuguese, I'm the minority here).
The shishkebob search went great, we found precut steak made just for kebobs, and of course I had no trouble finding red and green bell peppers, onions, and pineapple. The big surprise was they actually had the Lawry Sesame/Kebob marinate sauce! Kewl!!! No problem on the rice pilaf either (I bailed on the scratch method for that and bought the mix, got enough to do already).
Everyone here has been so nice and I have the Lavosh recipe which I will make tomorrow (unleavened sesame bread).
Then I thought, ya can't have Armenian without the Baklava!!! Ah but, in true Cheese Shop fashion, they were "fresh out", "van broke down today", "this is a cheese shop isn't it?" et al, LOL!!! So heck, I did a Google and found the recipe. Actually, it didn't look too difficult. Just one thing -- where the HECK am I gonna get phyllos (filos) in our one horse town???? Not a chance!!! So, despite internet warnings about how hard it was, this brave soul daggit made my OWN ultra thin pastry -- from SCRATCH!!!
Remind me never to do this again
Seven hours later... my goodness, think I lost 3 pounds today! I think I musta looked like one of those tanned Indians you see hunched over their metates in California history books, LOL!!! NEVER try this at home folks!! Get the premade ones or buy a machine roller!!!
Anywho, I had to make the Baklava tonite cuz it's s'posed to sit a few days, so glad I did! And boy am I proud of it - looks and smells perfect!!!
So tomorrow's the big day -- will let ya know if my family and friends like it or run away screaming!!! ROTFL!!

HELLO ALL!!!
Well, the "Armenian Day" feast went really well. Took me 2 days and 12 hours of work to make it -- and about 15 minutes for us to devour it!! LOL!
I can't believe everything worked out okay. The kebobs I planned I wanted to look really festive, so I bought red and green bell peppers and with that, the white onions, yellow pineapple, and red marinated meat it really was! Looked more like Christmas decorations than food, LOL!
The Lavosh turned out great, and I was right, brushed with honey they were terrific. And the Baklava -- well, put it this way, my stepson never likes /anything/ -- and I heard him exclaim in the kitchen (when I was clear out in my office), "Dang!! This is good!!". So I'm a happy camper.
Company couldn't make it (sigh) but at least my fam' and I had a lot of fun. We also bought two bottles of sparkling cider (we're pretty much teetotallers) to top things off and I served in my fancy multi-color glasses. (Yes I know Uzo would've been more appropriate, but oh well).
I took some pics so I could bore you all with it, will post them when they get processed.
Cheers all!!!
Muffit

Muffit,
I just read this, oh, that sounds soooooooooooooooo GOOD!! I'm glad your stepson liked the baklava. If you like doing kabobs (skewers), I've got a recipe for you, for vegetable skewers.
For 4 servings:
12 medium size mushrooms
12 cherry tomatoes
1 medium green pepper (cut into 1 inch squares)
1 medium yellow squash (sliced about 1/4 inch thick)
Mustard Marinade:
Stir together 3/8 cup each salad oil,dry white wine and white wine vinegar; 1 tbsp. Dijon-style mustard and whole mustard seed, 1 tsp dry mustard, 1 bay leaf and a dash each of salt and pepper.
---
After arranging the veggies on the skewers, cook over hot grill OR broil in oven for about 10 minutes, basting often.
This can be served as its own side dish (we served them over a bed of rice) along with grilled chicken (in a separate bowl, we had some of the marinade that we used to brush over the chicken).
The veggies go well with pork, too!!

Thanks BST! Wow, that sounds good. Yeah, I'll probably do shishkabob more often now, but I think the other stuff will only be a rare deal, due to the time and work involved.
Anywho, thanks!!

Agreed. As with any really good meal, preparation is the real "stinker". It would be nice if we could just whip up a meal like Samantha did on "Bewitched". LOL
