I did see on an old (like late 2002) RDM interview that the Cmdr Cain bit was definitely being concidered as a series story. This discovery answered my own question posed elsewhere being sceptical of RDM's knowledge and enthusiasm for incorporating TOS elements into a possible series.

Weren't both Dirk Benedict and Richard Hatch asked to star in the mini? I think I remember hearing something about it, and that they declined - something about wanting to stay true to the original story.
Does anyone have the slightest clue what I'm talking about? I was a die-hard TOS type person until seeing The Lowdown - the character driven part caught my attention, and the mini sucked me in from there. Point being, I was only half paying attention to anything said before I saw the mini, because I really didn't care.
Yeah - I know - regrets are pretty common with me. Not paying attention is almost up there with getting rid of all my BG stuff at a yard sale back in '86.

Lance Henriksen without question, given the dark nature of the new show. For an African-American character, Avery Brooks definitely!
On the old Forums, I'd always championed Jeff Bridges as a new Cain. I still stand by that if we ever see a faithful continuation of the show It would be spookily cool to see him reprising his father's role.

Yes you're right. And dispite Dirk appearing in the Lowdown, he's glad he didn't appear in the mini.

Why do you think that a series that only aired for one season is still as popular today? What did you think of the recent Battlestar Galactica remake?
A number of reasons. One, it was a family show so children who watched it with their parents are now in their 30s and the show reminds them of their family. Or if they did not have parents, the show became a very dear friend.
Two, the production values were extremely high and still hold up so it has not aged in that regard. Three, it was very well cast. Every actor had the right personality for the role they played.
I think the remake is a completely different show. One, it is not family, two, it is not a show of optimism as was the original but rather pessimistic.
And three, I don't think some of the actors were the right people for the part. It really had nothing to do with the original show. It's as different from that as Edward Olmos is from Loren Greene.
Thank God I wasn't in it!

Here's some ideas...
Rod Taylor
Patrick Bergin
Rutger Hauer
Gene Hackman
Adrian Paul
Lance Henriksen
Kenneth Branagh
Malcolm McDowell
Ron Pearlman
James Brolin
Donald Sutherland
Gary Oldman
Harvey Keitel
Clint Eastwood
Michael Cain
Ving Rhames
Don Johnson
Michael Biehn
Robert Duvall
Robert Conrad
Steve Granitz
Martin Sheen
Tom Selleck
Kurt Russell
Michael Madsen
Jason Statham
Scott Glenn
Wes Studi
Gabriel Byrne
David Carradine

Good list...
I think Scott Glenn (remember Hunt for Red October?) or Lance Henriksen could do a good job with it. But if we're looking for someone who inspires both love and fear in the troops - bring on Harrison Ford!

Ironside is the one, he beats Olmos for grittyness.

Re: Who can play Commander Cain?
In a oBSG re-do....
Mark Harmon?
How about Donald Trump? Certainly has the pugnacious ego to do it.

Re: Who can play Commander Cain?
I must admit that years ago Jeff bridges didnt seem quite right. But now 10 years later and after seeing him in the new TRON, I think Bridges could pull it off quite well.
But let me ask you this, would you want to play one of your dead fathers characters? Some people might not want to go down that path.
But there are really quite a few actors that would be a good fit.
One of the early posts in this thread mentioned Michael Ironside. His performance in Starship troopers is one of my all time favorites.
Really the hardest person to cast would be Adama.

Michael Ironside would be a good choice. But, regarding Jeff Bridges, I could actually see him doing it, if the situation ever presented itself. When you think about it, there's really no better tribute than having a son walk in his father's shoes for a bit.

Maybe it's just me, but I've seen him in too many villanous roles to see him as Cain.

Re: Who can play Commander Cain?
Based on the list above, I'd want either Wes Studi or Gary Oldman.
