Vipers from Second Coming
Hi all,
This is my first post, hope I've done it on the right subforum. If I'm wrong, I beg for mercy!!
Anyway, some years ago I could swear I've seen some pics from the Second Coming trailer that featured some kind of Viper other than the Scarlet Viper.
I think it was called an "Assault Viper"... Am I mad? Or I'm dreaming about Vipers?
I remember it was a cool design, much cooler than the "plastic" Viper from Galactica 2003 :uhdrop:

I've been trying to remember more details from my "mystery" Viper... I really think it was a design that wasn't used in the Second Coming trailer, because it was replaced by the Scarlet Viper
It was a CGI shot of 2 "Assault Vipers". That's all I remember

I had never seen the pics you posted
Just the 2 picks I posted,
But they all seem to be from the same Assault Vipers now that I think.
Thanks for the pics. Great Viper there

On Vipers:
There are two types:
1) The Scarlett Viper which I have seen pics of.
2) The Viper Duet featured in the Hatch novels. never seen a pic of it to this day.

In what book does the second kind of Viper appears? I'm reading them now - ok, I'm only in page 60 of the first
I know that Apollo says Starbuck still flys his "old" Viper, having refused a new model (I really don't remember the name but I'm sure it hasn't a Viper Duet) them refusing a Scarlet Viper...

The Viper Duet appears in Warhawk the second book by Richard Hatch. It also is in Resurrection by Richard Hatch.

Hi Predator
The Viper Interceptor was done by the first CGI team that worked with Richard on "The Second Coming" video. They left the project some where along the way and this is one of the few designs they did that still made it in to the video Richard shows now. It's a long story, if you have a year or so I can tell you.

The Assualt Viper was a concept by Mike McAdams that did not end up in the second coming trailer. It was replaced by the Scarlet Viper design but if i remember there was also another design they looked at.

the problem with new vipers...
The problem with Richard’s Scarlet Viper, as well as any other new Viper design, is that you have to assume that the Colonials have the capabilities to both make major design modifications, and put them into production. There is a line from one of the later episodes in the series that was cut, but in the “deleted scenes” section, Starbuck calls the Vipers a “flying collection of spare parts”, suggesting that even as early as the end of season one, the operations they had been involved in were beginning to take a toll. I would think that all of their production would be aimed at maintaining the fleet of Vipers they have…and maybe building a few new ones based on existing design plans. Would any modern US carrier group in the world be equipped to build a new F-18? And if they were, would they have been able to build a Super-Hornet if they only had the regular F-18s on board?
It also assumes that the Viper as it exists in the original series is not capable of accomplishing a particular kind of mission, and that another craft is needed. The Viper was shown to be adept at support, recon, strike, intercept, and superiority missions…. In short, it is a multi-mission craft, much like its real-world counterpart, the F-16.
I don’t think any craft in any show tops the beauty, design, and supposed capabilities of TOS Vipers.

One thing you have to remember the fleet was also full of various vessels including foundry vessels and electronic ships. They did have the capabilities to create a new line of fighter craft.

That is true. It is even covered in both novelizations of BG stories, The Tombs of Kobol and The Cylon Death Machine. The Scarlett Viper is of the Azure-class. The minerals needed to produce them were found on a planet I believe that the colonials visited while making their journey. (Armageddon).
