A Closely Guarded Secret
My contact at Skiffy told me again this morning that if there is any greenlighting of a series based on the miniseries its "a closely guarded secret". Such a decision would be in the hands of a very few top executives if it were made at all since nobody seems to know about it. At present, everyone my contact has asked (which is several people who should know) says the same thing.
Skiffy would like to make a BSG series. They understand that the bulk of the fan support being vocalized is largely frabricated from a few individuals but they don't put credit in the fan postings (for obvious reasons). They do believe that there is a strong base for Galactica if they can figure out how to harness it. Those who would release additional money aren't sure that the miniseries could do that.
As things stand this morning, Skiffy is seriously considering a follow-on miniseries probably in 2005. If that gains good numbers they may press with a full series then. They are also considering pressing with a series right away with whatever money they can get, at whatever level of quality they can get, with hopes of keeping the audience and increasing it with a larger budget the following year.
So far, they don't have money for either option.
Expect some wheeling and dealing throughout Jan to get either of the two options off of the ground. However, also keep in mind that some limiting factors beyond money are hampering the payoff for Skiffy without reducing the risk. That's another appeal of devoting efforts fully to Stargate: Atlantis, which still remains their focus.
