Fanfic
I need some suggestions from the people who have been around the longest.
That would be most of you.
Working mostly at lunch, and some evenings, I have finally completed my one (and probably only) original Battlestar Galactica story. I just need my Editor (the lovely and critically-minded Mrs. Dawg) to go through it, and it will be ready to post.
My question is: Where should I post it?
I know of a couple of sites that post BSG fan fiction - most notably galacticafanfic.com and doesn't battlestargalacticaclub.com, too?
I belong to a grand total of two BSG groups - here and CA - and I haven't had time to investigate other sites much at all. So, I don't know for sure who has the best site to get the best exposure for my story. That's where you all come in.
I want to put it out where all of you can read it, where other BSG fans can read it, and, maybe, where real-world publishers can read it and, with any luck, decide I'm worth a second look - I want to write professionally, dammit.
So give me your thoughts on the best place to post my fanfic. Here? There? WHERE????
Thanks, everyone.
I am
Dawg

Hmmm, I thought we had a Fan Fic section here....If not we do need to add one. If you want to write professionally, you will need to get an agent at some point. I have a couple of sites that can offer great advice on the ins and outs of writing. I'll pm them to you.

Dawg, I'm looking forward to reading your story, but don't get your hopes up about publishers. Fanfic won't do anything for a writer except possibly provide a good training ground for telling a good story.
If I remember right, didn't you say something about finishing a novel? That's the thing to concentrate on. Short stories sales will get you in a few magazines, but those also won't really amount to much unless you're in big magazines, frequently. Novels are really the only option for someone who wants to write professionally.

Dwag,
RGrant is right, novels are the way to go. Getting a novel published is far easier than it used to be.
I owe you an Email which should help give you some direction on this, watch for it tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks, guys, I appreciate the interest and information.
I would be happy to post it here, if there is interest (and if someone will point me in the right direction). I remember Tom saying recently that there was a writing section that wasn't getting attention so he removed it - I don't remember ever seeing a writing section. Are there enough writers here to warrant it? I kind of doubt I'll be putting out any more, myself, but I'd love to read other's work, too. If it would be better for me to post it at fanfic.com or another site, I'll do that (thanks, Deckape, I'll be checking it out). It's a short story - only about 12,000 words.
RGrant, I am working on a novel. Next weekend I will be pitching it (for the second time) to an editor from New York (she liked it last time, but it needed extensive work). The story line is complete, but I'm fleshing it out still.
The BSG story is one that has been rattling around in my head for the past 25 years, though, and it's been burning a hole trying to get out lately. So, I kind of took a break on the novel to get it out, so I can now go back and concentrate on the novel again.
Anyway, keep the suggestions coming. I really appreciate it.
And thanks, repcisg, I'll be watching for it.
I am
Dawg

Dawg Repcisg is righ t but so is Rgrant. While fanfic isn't
the way to go to get published ......it is still a great training
ground in order to hon your craft until you finish your novel.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, shiningstar. Amberstar (are you guys related or something?), I haven't posted it yet - Mrs. Dawg hasn't had a chance to look it over yet, and I haven't looked much at the sites Deckape and Kingfish have suggested, so I haven't completely decided yet where to put it.
I'll let everybody know when it's up and where it's up.
I'm still open to suggestions, though.

Actually, shiningstar, that's where I'm going to post it, I think. I've registered, am now waiting for the OK to start posting, then, apparently, I have to get permission to post the story.
I looked at fanfic.com, which is a nice place for those who are really into fanfic of all kinds, from what I see. CF has more artists than writers (or at least the interests tend towards art rather than writing), even though I love it here.
But I decided on battlestargalacticaclub.com because it is more familiar to the folks here, I have a lot of respect for Starship Trooper from everything he's posted since I found BSG online, and I like the way they've got that forum set up - they have a section for fanfic all to itself, and they monitor it. Since this is probably going to be the only BSG writing I do (my novel does come first), and I will probably get more out of that site than any other otherwise, I decided on there.
I'll let everybody know when I get it posted, and I'll supply a link.
Again, thanks Em, Kingfish, and everybody for thier input on this.
I am
Dawg

Yep I saw Amberstar. By the way Dawg I posted part
of a scifi bsg and sg1 crossover on that board. I just got
permission. all You have to do is to post your proposal
get three AYE or YES votes from the older members then
you can write it.
