My final build of a Colonial battlestar
This is my absolute final build for the classic battlestar design.
She is fully armed, has some 116 physical weapon emplacements, (based on my writers' bible for my fanfic "Galactica: The Last Battlestar") and a lot more physical surface detail around the rims of the flight pods.
I thought this pic was one of the best renders I've done of her.
I don't expect any responses...most folks can't be bothered to provide feedback anyway. If you respond. Great. If not, just as. Just enjoy.
Memory stats:
Faces: 6,478,55
Megabytes: 144
Stats based on my build:
Sci-fi Length: 2,000 meters or 2 Kilometrons
Armament:
Mega Pulsars- 2 forward
Pulsars- 16 (2 port belly, 2 stbd belly, 5 port, 5 starboard, 2 aft)
Planetary bombardment cannons- 2 belly
Sub-pulsars- 6 (2 fwd, 2 port belly, 2 stbd belly)
Anti-starfighter/CIWS defenses: 90 rapid fire double laser cannons (36 port, 36 starboard, 2 fwd port, 2 fwd starboard, 2 bridge mounted, 2 port aft, 2 stbd aft, 8 belly)
(not rendered or shown----> )200 missile tubes, capable of firing conventional, nuclear, and ECM weapons.
Model and starfield built/rendered by Martok2112

Re: My final build of a Colonial battlestar
Very cool! For me I love that it looks like a mix of the series, but with flatter style of Ralph McQuarrie's preproduction designs. Would be nice to create a still shot recreating one of McQuarrie's paintings with your models.
I also like the high contrast of light and dark. I've been watching the old Space:1999 series 1 on bluray, and for their model shots they used a high contrast as well. I think it really helped the effects, rather than everything having a overall soft fill light. Its dramatic when part of the model goes to black shadow.

Re: My final build of a Colonial battlestar
It does look very McQuarrieesque and has a shark-like air of menace about it.

Re: My final build of a Colonial battlestar
I like, too - for all the reasons stated above. You did manage to capture the feel McQuarry put into his initial design drawings, and you also captured the tethered menace...
Really good job, Steve!

Re: My final build of a Colonial battlestar
WOW! Thank you, everyone. Those are very kind words, and given the experience level of some of the other model builders here, definitely taken for high praise.
When I started building this thing, about a year ago (if anyone remembers my earlier builds), I based this on the Konami miniature, which I found to be far more accurate for a 3 inch mini, than the ERTL/AMT model. I was just starting with Blender, and didn't quite have all the interface for building and joining worked out. The nose section is definitely not accurate, the way it scoops in on the underside, but, I've gotten used to it, and considered it my own twist on the design. (in addition to giving the ship more visible weaponry, doors on the back of the landing arms, and name plates in the same areas). Over time, I've added to her, and this is definitely the final build. Definitely meant for solitary shots, or at least, shots with a couple smaller, less memory intensive ships. She be a memory hog.
Thank you again, everyone, for your kind words and feedback. I am more encouraged to continue with my projects. (And it definitely made my week.) If you'd like to see a quick shot of her in motion, please check out my "lens flare" test, elsewhere in this forum.
Dave, I too love working with "harsh" lighting conditions, as it should be in space. My inspirations were 2001, Space: 1999, and ALIEN. I'll try to see about recreating an RMQ image with my models.
My friends, if I've seemed a bit on edge since my return here, I do apologize. Not exactly a great time for me right now, but I'm dealing. I truly apologize for anything brazen I may have said recently.
Here's a shot I did before this one, using the same sort of lighting motif. My plenet building skillz are getting better since this shot too, so plz, don't hold this planet against me like its inhabitants already do. Ha ha ha. Kinda tried to go for a U.S. Air Force type motif.

Make sure you get the right one. The one next to it is just right.

Pixel, not point
The points all look good. They're holding all the polygons just right

Re: My final build of a Colonial battlestar
Hey Steve!
This looks SAHWEEET!! Nice job. One question. What is her fighter capacity and launch tubes per bay? I do like this design. A very McQuarrie-esque flavor to her design.
If it weren't for that ONE pixel...
Best to you, my friend.

Maybe if you pointed to the misplaced pixel, that could help Mr Martok make sure that all the polygons are just right.
Just a thought... possibly a misguided one but, a thought, at any rate. Basic rate, that is, not holiday rate.

As long as it isn't "office rates"....that would be scary.

Hi, Steve,
Thanks for the kind words.
My Galactica (per my fanfic Galactica: The Last Battlestar) can carry up to 150 fighters of varying type, 20 Raptors, 20 Mambas (variant on the Raptor),
10 light shuttles, 10 medium shuttles, and 10 heavy shuttles. I think she can launch up to 16 fighters per side at once.
Her carried craft breakdown, as of the fall of Caprica, works out something like this:
25- SF04A Kraits (these are based on the Viper Mk VII from the new series).
25- SF41A Vipers (based on the Viper Mk II from the new series)
25- SF41B Vipers (based on the original series Viper)
5 light shuttles
5 medium shuttles (original series based ship)
10 heavy shuttles (new series shuttle)
10 SE-6B Raptors (electronic warfare and reconnaissance craft)
16 SA-6A Mambas (bomber variant of the Raptor)
That's the breakdown of her carried craft as of the events of the holocaust in my story.
