I did it with a free pyro plugin for 3dsmax. Funny thing is, I've been pulling my
hair out for weeks trying to get it to look just like the show and all that
time I forgot I had the plugin at my disposal.
It's basically just smoke particles with a gradient used for coloring and transparency.
Here's my previous effort which not only doesn't look accurate but took 15 minutes to render. This new method looks correct and renders in 4 seconds.
If you google search for cinema 4d pyrocluster....that should get you on the right path.
