Repost from tvshowsondvd.com:
The "Traffic-Stopping Packaging" for Battlestar Galactica - The Complete Epic Series that caught everyone's attention turns out to be a limited-time offer.
This week Universal announced that on Feb. 10th they are re-releasing the DVD set with different packaging, which will not include the very striking (and rather large) outer box that was designed to look like the enemy of the Colonial Warriors in the show.
Due to the New Year's holiday, we were unable to obtain any shots of what the new "unlimited" packaging will look like. We'll supply that just as soon as it's available. One speculation is that it will simply be the inner "igipak" (cardboard fold-out disc case) that is currently inside the larger "Cylon Head" version. One certain bet is that it WILL be smaller, and easier to store with the rest of your DVD collection.
With that in mind, a casualty of this changeover COULD be the 9.5 inch by 8 inch, 20-page "Collector's Book" that comes with the current packaging. Chock full of publicity photos and an episode guide, it's way too large to fit in the standard DVD cases (which are typically around 5.25" x 7.5". Perhaps it will be shrunk down to fit, modified in some way, or removed all together. Universal's information didn't discuss this item; we'll try to get an answer after the holiday week.
The packaging change is sure to increase the chances of the original version becoming a collectible item. Some retailers are already sold out of this, and may or may not be able to restock. "While supplies last" is soon going to become the key phrase where the Cylon Head Edition is concerned.
Here at TVShowsOnDVD, we will today split out The Complete Epic Series into two different DVD listings: one for the "Limited Cylon Head Edition", and the other for the upcoming "Unlimited Packaging Edition" that's due on 2/10/04. This way, our registered users who like to use our "catalog your TV-on-DVD releases" function will be able to specify exactly which version they own.
Speculation is that the timing of this re-release may co-incide with secret plans to release the 2003 mini-series "re-imagining" of the show, which Sci-Fi Channel recently aired. Most of you have strong feelings about this new version, either hating it outright or defending it fiercely. Those in the latter category are anxious for a DVD release of the mini-series. However, NO announcement has been made yet. Stay tuned, and we'll let you know if we hear anything.
