Baby Names
As I said in the Happy Halloween thread, Mrs. WHD is 8 mos. along. Time to really be thinking about names. We have come up with a boy's name, but cannot agree on a girl's name. She wants Olivia but I can't stand the name (apologies to any warrior here with that name, nothing personal.)
I humbly beseech your collective help. Toss out girls names, but there is one restriction---it can't be a name that is obviously from any sci-fi show (Cassiopea and Aeryn are out--much as I like them) cuz she won't buy them.
Thanks in advance.

Congrats, WHD. I take it, then, that you don't know if the pending bundle of joy has indoor or outdoor plumbing?
Yeah, Olivia has always been a bit down from the top of my list of favorite girl names. But what's your choice if it's a boy?

WHD, I don't know what type of names you and your wife would like, such as those with meanings or those which sound inheritantly of one race or origin, or just regular pretty names. I like Ariel, which is commonly associated with angels; Claudia, which is common in Brazilian culture; Rachel, a usually Jewish name; Nicole (I'd call my daughter Nikki a lot, love both names); Cara, Rissa, Alicia, Leila, Tasha, Margaret (I like Maggie), Melissa, Jessica, Lisa, Dana, and Adriana and Anna are both pretty names. It's funny that I don't get excited over the name Ann (no offense to any Ann's reading), but I love Anna.

Before I'd name a girl Olivia, I'd definitely go to a bookstore kids section and read an illustrated toddler book (usually hardback) called Olivia. Olivia is a little, very busy and accomplished pig with big dreams. Really cute book. Rather hyper, non-stop pig. It's pretty funny, really.
That would be my only hesitation about Olivia.
I too would need more guidance to suggest names.....??

Leia would work, 14th, you can spell it Leah and have Rachel's older sister's name.

Roseanna is a nice one. I'd never saddle a kid with my name, Arlene. Old fashioned it may be but I hate it at times.

My suggestion is go for a name with meaning and uniqueness, just not too corny!!
For my oldest daughter, my wife and I combined our own names and named her Marial...she is truly a product of both of us!!!!

Phillip Richmond (She likes Phillip, Richmond after my Grandfather)
As far as what we're looking for...anything goes except obvious sci-fi names.
My other two girls are named Amanda Michelle and Emily Nicole.

I'm partial to Katherine, Robin or Mellissa, for no particular reason. If our son had been a girl, we were going to go with Mellissa. (Actually, if our son had been born a girl, we would have had a talk with the ultrasound tech about umbilical chords....)

There's always Phillipa (it's from ST:TNG, but Mrs. WHD doesn't need to know that).
You know, you might go for something unusual, like Julie, Ruth, Joanna, Maren (there's a thought - this world needs more Marens), Janet, Alice, Christy (or Christina), Jennifer, Margaret....
Edit: and it just struck me that MR. WHD has been a busy boy.

My wife and I shared on the naming for our daughter. I got to choose her middle name -
Serena.
The sci-fi tie-in, for those of us here, is obvious. But, to other folks.....

Thanks, Shiningstar.
With a name I've always loved AND an actress who I , this one was a winner from the very beginning.
PS - Wife and daughter love it too, especially daughter. That's good since she's going to carry it the rest of her life.

Not yet. Thanks for all the input, folks! Keep the ideas coming!
The docs have scheduled it for the 19th at 11:00 am.
I'll let everyone know what it is and what the name is after that.

How about Sofia? (Or Sophia?) Meaning: Wisdom.
Or Josephine? Meaning: God will increase... I have NO idea what that means, but it is a pretty name.
And congratulations to you and to Mrs. WHD! My nephew was just born on the first day of bow season for deer. My sister's water broke as my brother-in-law had his hand on the doorknob, ready to go hunting. So, girl or boy, that baby was going to be named Hunter!
